I would like to start this week with thanking all those who helped in the recovery from Storms Eunice and Franklin. I am very conscious there were lots of households in Sherfield English, Melchet Park, Chilbolton and Stockbridge without power until Tuesday and Wednesday. Compensation is available from SSE, including for those who were forced into B&B accommodation, and there are some useful links available on their website.
We are all indebted to the farmers, tree surgeons etc who turned out over the weekend to help clear fallen trees and branches. There is, however, a serious issue with red diesel and a forthcoming requirement to drain equipment tanks of red diesel before carrying out this sort of community activity. To my mind this is a classic case of the Government cutting off its own nose to spite its face, it makes no sense whatsoever and I have made that point to the Treasury.
This week I asked the Home Office Minister whether she will support the Law Commission in making public sexual harassment a specific crime. There are several legislative opportunities to do so and I want to see the Government take more proactive steps to keep women safe.
Last Friday, because of the number of trees down, I could not make it to the Romsey School production of Beauty and the Beast, which was hugely disappointing, but hopefully I will get luckier with Nomads' Babes in the Wood.
