At Braishfield Primary School last week I was asked what the best bit of my job is, and it is undoubtedly constituency Fridays, just like last week. I managed to fit into one day a really informative visit to the Yellow Door project in Southampton, which helps victims of domestic and sexual abuse, a quick trip to the job centre in Southampton to hear about Kickstart and then a trip to talk to years 5 and 6 at Braishfield.
It was great to be back to a normal Friday, with visits, surgery calls by zoom and above all else being in the constituency. However, this Friday will be completely different, with a sitting day in Westminster where I hope to speak in the debate on the proposed legislation supporting British Sign Language.
I try to keep Fridays for Romsey and Southampton North, but this week's debate has been driven by so many people with hearing loss across the country, including here, and it is an issue I have repeatedly raised in Parliament. Additionally I have been pleased to do a number of zoom meetings throughout the pandemic with local hearing loss groups, and am also conscious we have a really trailblazing local company, Signly, that has incredible tech solutions to support BSL. So when much of Westminster has been talking about only one issue I have made sure my focus is on constructive solutions to local challenges. It helps maintain perspective.
