With scorching sunshine replaced by torrential rain and thunderstorms I am glad I didn’t have anymore of my outdoor surgeries scheduled this week!
I was horrified last weekend at the numbers of call outs for Fire and Rescue Services to fires on public open spaces in the wider region, caused by disposable barbecues, open fires and in some cases deliberate arson. We saw Hampshire Fire and Rescue having to deal with fires at Testwood Lakes and Peartree Green in Southampton, the smoke from both of which impacted constituents in this area.
My last ever question to Boris Johnson was about disposable barbecues, which one constituent ridiculed me for. Some responsible retailers have stopped selling them, which is good news, but it is only a temporary measure and to be blunt I think it should be permanent. Of course the PM’s response was to say people need to use them responsibly, sadly the evidence of last weekend is that they don’t.
A few weeks ago a constituent told me I needed to spend some time at A&E to “understand the true state of the NHS”. I am not sure if that was a premonition, but this week I did and can report that treatment at SGH was superb. Oh and I am now sporting a sling for the next 6 weeks having broken my scapula. One handed typing is challenging.
